F1: Bahrain Grand Prix highlights

By admin · March 23, 2010 · Filed in 2010 Season, F1, F1 Teams · No Comments »

So, I must admit that I found the 2010 season opener to be a bit dull, especially after having first watched that overly entertaining Sao Paolo Indy Car Hydrofest… And thus, not surprisingly, The Big-4 Constructors, who coincidently are the favourites for this years Title contenders locked-out the first four rows upon the grid, albeit reigning World Champion JENSE had to be a bit miffed with being in last place of these vaunted eight competitors… As its a bit funny to think that there are others outside of these four Teams who want to crash their party. Thus well done by Renaults lead driver Robert Kubica to start P9, with Force Indias Adrian Sutil claiming the final grid spot of the Q3 Qualie session…

Yet unfortunately the Row 5 recipients who were the only Top 10 runners opting to start out on the Harder prime rubber had their strategy go up in smoke when Mark Webber pulled an 007-like maneuver when the Aussie called Smoke-On upon the lights going green and laid down an immense amount of blue oil smoke!

And while all of the Big 4 runners finished in the points, these are now awarded to tenth place and thus Force Indias other driver Vitantonio Liuzzi finished in P9 with the ageless Rubino, a.k.a. Rubens Barrichello scoring a single point for tenth place in his record 285th start.

Meanwhile I thought the New Boyz did an admirable job in their respective Organizations debutant Grand Prix and look forward to seeing them claw their ways forward, although I suppose somebody will have to disappoint sooner or later, eh?

Race Drive of Bahrain
Whale although I plan on Awarding this in the remaining races to hopefully some of the lower drivers, Id have to say my choices are between Ferraris Felipe Massa and Mercedes Nico Rosberg, as Nico has been overshadowed by his teammate, some Seven Time World Champion named Michael Schumacher. Yet the Scuderias Massa is returning to action from that horrible accident at the Hunga-boring race weekend, which still gives me chills when I sit there and watch his Ferraris V8 lump idling away in monotone with NO movement from the cockpit which Ive kept on tape. So, for his heroics, not to mention out qualifying the much ballyhooed double World Champion Alonso, Felipe Massa gets my nod upon closing that very scary racing chapter of his career!

NOTE
Dont forget that this year features a new points scoring system that now pays out to 10th place, with a higher total points scoring system enacted: 1st = 25pts; 2nd: 18; 3rd: 15; 4th: 12; 5th: 10; 6th: 8; 7th: 6; 8th: 4; 9th: 2; 10th: 1. So keep those calculators handy!

McLaren
Not a bad start to the season, albeit both drivers only passes for position came courtesy of their pit stops and their crews excellent work, as Hamilton was gifted his podium by Vettels troubles, while button was perhaps too cautious in regards to expected tyre wear and still wasnt able to pass Schumacher even in competitive equipment.

No. 1) J. Button: Q) 8th; R) 7th
No. 2) L. Hamilton: Q) 4th; R) 3rd

Mercedes
Although the spotlight was firmly affixed upon Seven Time World Champion Michael Schumachers return to the cockpit of a Formula 1 car for the first time since his retirement at the end of 2006, it was his junior teammate Nico Rosberg who outshone his elder countryman on track this weekend, as Nico not only out qualified Schuey, but finished ahead of him, as I enjoyed Michaels comments about his coming together with Nico at the start by saying: May be we kissed a little bit…

No. 3) M. Schumacher: Q) 7th; R) 6th
No. 4) N. Rosberg: Q) 5th; R) 5th

Red Bull
Talk about the tales of two different races inside a team, as ZEBB, a.k.a. Sebastian Vettel clearly held the upper hand upon teammate Mark Webber, easily out qualifying the Aussie by taking his sixth career Pole Position and then apparently cruising off into the sunset to lead wire-to-wire, before a mysterious spark plug failure robbed him of apparent victory… As Vettel had to settle for fourth place, while Webber came home further down after his smoke screen dissipated.

No. 5) S. Vettel: Q) Pole; R) 4th
No. 6) M. Webber: Q) 6th; R) 8th

Ferrari
Although I feel that Alonsos victory was gifted to him after Vettels mechanical woes, nevertheless the Spaniard joined the rarefied company of Fangio, Mansell and Raikkonen as first time Scuderia debutants to claim victory… Although I was more impressed with Felipe Massas outcome, as he outpaced Alonso in qualifying, which for only the second time in two years the Double World Champion lined up behind his teammate! And recall that it was Massa who decimated The Iceman last season.

No. 7) F. Massa: Q) 2nd; R) 2nd
No. 8) F. Alonso: Q) 3rd; R) 1st

2010 New Boyz
What can you say about these guys? Whale, they all made it onto the grid, and their finishing order seems to be indicative of their resources and amount of effort made by each of them, as clearly it would appear at the moment that Lotus is the best funded of these three…

Lotus
So Round 1 goes to the Lotus squad who was the only team of the newcomers to actually finish, with Kovy taking top honours, whilst his elder teammate also limped home to see both cars classified as finishing, albeit The Scrumptious One (Trulli) was 3 laps down and suffering from a hydraulics problem.

No. 18) J. Trulli: Q) 20th; R) 17th, R-Hydraulics (-3 laps)
No. 19) H. Kovalainen: Q) 21st; R) 15th (-2 laps)

Hispania Racing
As Ive already noted, it was a superb triumph just for this team to make it onto the grid, not to mention have both cars contest the race, even if the second chassis didnt actually run its first lap until Saturdays Q1 Qualie session, where debutant Karun Chandhok promptly found out just how far the deep end of the grid was! And due to his total lack of practice, not surprisingly Chandhok crashed out on the races first lap after hitting a patch of the new infields bumpy portion of track! While his Rookie teammate Bruno Senna had a far better showing, albeit also retiring with mechanical gremlins.

No. 20) R-Karun Chandhok: Q) 24th; R) Retired; Accident (24th)
No. 21) R-Bruno Senna: Q) 23rd; R) Retired; Engine (19th)

Virgin Racing
Although Timo Glock won the qualifying duel of the New Boyz, after an entertaining scrum with Lotuss Heikke Kovalainen, the German was forced to retire due to a noted Gearbox issue. Rookie teammate Lucas di Grassi Also retired early with hydraulic gremlins, which seemed to be the Achilles heel of the Virgin racecar this weekend, as perhaps the virtual worlds design computations cannot account for the real world beatings they take?

No. 24) T. Glock: Q) 19th R) Retired; Gearbox (120th)
No. 25) R-Lucas di Grassi: Q) 22nd; R) Retired; Hydraulics (23rd)

KEY
Q) = Qualifying;; R) = Race

Virgin Racing-Cosworth: Timo Glock

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

2008_gloc_hungary-470x323Timo Glock graduated from karting into Formula BMW in 2000, and two years later he stepped up to Formula Three. He won three races in the German category and ended the year third. The following year three more wins came but he fell to fifth in what was now the European championship.

Jordan

But he landed a testing role with Jordan for 2004, and when Giorgio Pantano ran into difficulties with the team he was called up for a one-off race at Montreal where he beat Nick Heidfeld to finish eleventh. After the Toyotas and Williams were disqualified he was elevated to seventh to score two points.

Three further outings came at the end of the year but despite the maturity and competence of his first performances, there was no place for him at cash-strapped Jordan in 2005.

He made a brief foray into Champ Car with Rocketsports, but decided to gamble on returning to Europe on the new rung below Formula 1: GP2.

His seat at the BCN team looked distinctly un-promising at the start of 2006. But when Tristan Gommendy vacated a plum seat at iSport, Glock switched berths and was extremely strong in the second half of the season no mean feat in Lewis Hamiltons championship year.

Glock and iSport were favourites for the title in 2007 and he duly beat Lucas di Grassi of ART (Hamiltons former team) but it took him until the final round to do it. He had been uncommonly unfortunate with technical problems, but there had also been unnecessary collisions (with team mate Andreas Zuber at Magny-Cours) and errors (in qualifying at Silverstone).

BMW Sauber: Pedro de la Rosa

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

dela_bmwsaub_2010-470x264Spains Pedro de la Rosa did not set the F1 world alight in quite the same way as Fernando Alonso, but unlike his illustrious countryman he did score a championship point on his dbut for the Arrows team in 1999.

Arrows were falling into decline and de la Rosa moved to Jaguar to replace Luciano Burti in 2001. He ran team mate Eddie Irvine close at times but both were out after 2002.

De la Rosa joined Alexander Wurz at McLarens test team and made a significant contribution to their return to form.

The team preferred the more rapid Wurz but when a shoulder injury kept Juan Pablo Montoya from racing in Bahrain in 2005, it was de la Rosa who stepped in as Wurz was still too tall for the MP4-20.

De la Rosa put in a strong drive to fourth, but it was Wurz who got the car for Imola and trumped the Spaniard with a third-placed podium finish.

While Wurz left for Williams, De la Rosa remained at McLaren for 2006. This paid off when Montoya quit halfway through the year and de la Rosa got the call-up. He scored his best career result to date in the Hungaroring with a fine drive to second.

For 2007 he returned to his full-time testing role when Lewis Hamilton joined the team. However his name stayed in the headlines as he was implicated in the McLaren-Ferrari spying scandal. It emerged that he and Alonso, who joined the team that year, had exchanged emails discussing confidential Ferrari information obtained by Mike Coughlan.

When discovered the emails led to McLaren being expelled from the 2007 constructors championship and fined $100m. Although Alonso left the team at the end of the year, de la Rosa remained as third driver, the team preferring Heikki Kovalainen for the second race seat.

After two more years on the sidelined de la Rosa joined BMW Sauber as a race driver for the 2010 season.

Scuderia Toro Rosso-Ferrari: Sebastien Buemi

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

buem_toro_alga_2009_470313Sebastien Buemi was just 15 years old when he drove a Formula 1 car for the first time. In 2004 sponsors TAG Heuer arranged for him to sample a five-year-old Arrows at Luc on France.

That was the same year Buemi had made the step up from karts to racing cars. He finished third in the German Formula BMW championship while Sebastian Vettel, another future F1 driver, romped to the title with 18 wins from 20 starts.

He was beaten to the 2005 Formula BMW title by Nico Hlkenberg, who scored 287 points to Buemis 282. The same year he made his F3 debut in the Spanish championship round at Valencia. The following year he raced in the F3 Euro Series for Mcke, won the reverse-grid race at Oschersleben, and ended the year 12th overall.

Like Vettel, Buemi often seized the chance to make an early move into higher categories when the opportunity presented itself. In 2007, while racing in the Formula Three Euroseries, he made several starts for ART in GP2, impressing on his debut in Monaco. In his 11 starts he set three fastest laps, but back in F3 Romain Grosjean beat him to the title. Buemi also made several starts for the Swiss A1 Grand Prix team.

Buemi also finished second to Grosjean in the inaugural GP2 Asia championship, winning once at Sentul in Indonesia. He stayed with his Arden team for the main GP2 championship and took fifth overall with two wins, including an excellent drive in wet/dry conditions at Magny-Cours.

Renault F1 Team: Robert Kubica

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

kubi_bmw_montreal_470313Robert Kubica got his first car at the age of four: it had a four-stroke engine, no horsepower but still could do about 40kph. He drove that until he got a real kart two and a half year later, and aged ten he got his racing licence and started competing.

With little motor racing infrastructure in his native Poland, Kubica started competing in Italy from the age of 13, driving for kart manufacturer CRG. Kubica coped with the cultural differences and continued to reap successes in karting. He raced against Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg among others in the European JICA championships, and Hamilton rates Kubica as one of his fiercest competitors.

Williams-Cosworth: Rubens Barrichello

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

barr_braw_vale_8-470x313Rubens Barrichello started karting in 1981, aged nine, and two years later was Brazilian Junior Karting Champion. From 1986-88 he won the Sao Paulo city and Brazilian National Karting titles every year, and set his sights on a career in motor racing.

He arrived in Europe in 1990, and won the GM Formula Opel Lotus Euroseries with the Draco team. That led to a switch to Formula Three with top team West Surrey Racing for 1991, thanks to his backing from food company Arisco. Barrichello came out on top in a closely-fought championship that swung in his favour when rival David Coulthard suffered car problems in the penultimate round.

Barrichellos next step was Formula 3000, where he finished second on his debut at Silverstone, with fastest lap, for the Il Barone Rampante team. Another second at Barcelona put him in the lead of the championship but Barrichello was to suffer a major crash at Enna. He spun off the very fast lakeside circuit and crashed into a rescue truck mercifully his car was travelling backwards at the time.

The team also most momentum with a mid-season switch of engine suppliers from Judd to Cosworth, as much for political reasons (they were hoping to switch to F1) as for competitiveness. Barrichello ended the year third over all with 27 points, the championship won by fellow rookie Luca Badoer with Andrea Montermini second.

Scuderia Ferrari: Fernando Alonso

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

alon_barc_rena_2008_q_470313Fernando Alonsos father Jose Luid originally tried to get his daughter Lorena, five years older than Alonso, interested in karting. But she never took to it and her kart was passed on to three year-old Fernando.

Alonso came very close to taking a third consecutive championship in 2007 finishing third in the title race, one point behind victor Kimi Raikkonen, and tied with team mate Lewis Hamilton.

But Alonso found himself at the centre of an acrimonious dispute with the McLaren team and opinion remains divided over whether he was the instigator or the victim.

There were signs early in the season that Alonso was unhappy with Hamiltons early run of success. He became increasingly vocal with his demands that the team concentrate on backing his title bid, even as Hamilton moved into the lead of the championship.

Relations within the team broke down completely at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton refused an instruction from the team to allow Alonso past during qualifying, so Alonso retaliated by delaying Hamilton in the pits, preventing his team mate from setting a final lap time.

The stewards punished Alonso for baulking Hamilton and McLaren for failing to provide an adequate explanation of what happened.

During the course of the season McLaren had been defending itself against allegations that it had obtained confidential information about Ferraris car. Ron Dennis claimed that on the morning of the Hungarian race Alonso threatened to expose compromising information about the alleged espionage of Dennis did not rein Hamilton in.

McLaren persisted with its policy of giving both drivers equal treatment and Alonso alienated himself further from the team, increasing his public complaints about their operation.

At the final round, at the request of the Spanish racing authority, an independent adjudicator was stationed in the McLaren pit during qualifying to ensure there was no foul play. He found none.

Shortly after the season ended McLaren terminated their contract with Alonso and he returned to Renault for 2008.

Scuderia Ferrari: Felipe Massa

By admin · March 18, 2010 · Filed in F1 Drivers · No Comments »

ferrari_world_finals_2009_2-14-470x313Massa won both the Italian and European Formula Renault championships in 2000 taking the former despite having missed two races.

He moved to the Italian F3000 series the next year and won the championship with six wins from eight races.

Sauber

Massa was the European Formula 3000 champion and Peter Sauber snapped him up for 2002. Massas first season saw a lot of mistakes and following a collision with Pedro de la Rosa in the Italian Grand Prix Sauber kept him out of the cockpit for one race his seat taken by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who would replace Massa at the team for 2003.

But Massa scored a major coup by landing a Ferrari testing deal for 2003, courtesy of his manager Nicolas Todt, son of Ferrari boss Jean Todt. Massa developed not only the car but also his driving style, modelling himself on Michael Schumacher who won his sixth championship that year with Ferrari.

The next season began poorly for Massa as the new F60 proved unreliable as well as slow to begin with. Once the car improved Massa began regularly scoring top-six finishes but at Hungary his season took a shocking twist.

During qualifying a spring fell off the back of Rubens Barrichellos car. Massa was the next driver on the scene and, with incredible misfortune, took a blow to the head when the spring hit his crash helmet.

Massas car then slammed into a barrier on the outside of the circuit. He was airlifted to hospital and a tense few days followed as the world waited to hear of his condition. Eventually, good news began to trickle through. His season was over, but he would race again.
